Sunbelt TV markets grow while rustbelt markets contract. Atlanta and Dallas are top 10 TV markets. Phoenix and Tampa Bay are only a few slots behind. If the NHL wants network clearances in the US, they need these markets badly.Networks make even more money off a sports deal if they also own TV stations in a market where there's a team. In Dallas, FOX, NBC and CBS all own their affiliates. In Atlanta, FOX and CBS own their affiliates. In Phoenix, FOX and CBS own their own affiliates and in Tampa Bay, FOX owns its own affiliates. When networks own stations in markets with teams they make money selling advertising on the national level AND to local business. It's all about the money. This must be about TV money.
