NHL Suspends Cooke For Season

Matt Cooke : Head Hunter and Dirty Player

March 21, 2011 – Dr. Rush

The NHL finally made the right call in suspending trouble making goon Matt Cooke for the season and for the first round of the playoffs. Cooke has been the single biggest factor in the fight against troublemakers in the NHL. It’s players like Cooke who are headhunting and sending

A few days back Cooke made the headlines again with another head shot on an opponent. This time the victim was the Rangers Ryan McDonagh who took a Cooke elbow to the head. McDonagh was alright after the hit but you can watch the replay below to see that Cooke only had one intent and that was to drive an elbow into the head of McDonagh. Pretty clear cut.

The NHL was rather quick to respond and booted Cooke for the remainder of the season and the first round of the playoffs in a new found effort to crack down on head injuries. And good for them. The NHL needs to shut down the cheap hits that sends players off the ice for long periods of time with concussions and other injuries. Oddly enough, it’s the Penguins star player, Sidney Crosby, that is the center of a lot of this debate. Crosby has been out for a few months now with concussion symptoms and it’s doing no good for the NHL to have its best player on the IR. Too bad it took the league a few months to figure that out.
