A True Bruins Fan! Boston Dude Shaves B’s Logo in Back Hair

September 30, 2011 – Dr. Rush

Someone at a SuperCuts in Boston hopefully walked away last week with a huge tip after an unusual request from a Bruins fan.  The Boston B’s won their first Stanley Cup in forever and Bruins fan Anthony Sorrentino wanted to show his Bruins pride … literally.

The 33-year-old diehard Bruins fan from Lynn, Mass., shaved the B’s logo in his back hair, as seen below. All this Black and Gold fanatic wants is some opening night tickets.

That’s one way to get some attention. Now I wouldn’t mind donating some tickets if I had them but I would require he wore his shirt during the game.  I also think this is a good promotion throughout the league.  Imagine a whole section of the arena with dudes like Anthony.  Whew….maybe not.

Nabokov Toe Save Makes Islanders Highlights

Evgeni Nabokov

September 28, 2011 – Dr. Rush

It took awhile but the New York Islanders finally got their man. Goalie Evgeni Nabokov wanted to come back to the NHL last year to play with a winning team and go into the playoffs, specifically the Detroit Red Wings. But the Islanders popped up during the waiver process and claimed Nabokov and let’s just say Evgeni was not very happy.

He didn’t show up at all last year to the team but finally realized that if he was going to ever play in the NHL again he would have to honor the Islanders claim. So now he’s on Long Island playing hockey again in the NHL.

And good for him. The Islanders need a goalie (among other things) to carry them through the season. To mark his new home Evgeni even made up a new goalie mask so you know it’s official now.

In his first game as an Islanders, Evgeni Nabokov stopped 15 of 16 shots in two periods. It didn’t do much good as the Flames blanked them to win 2-0. Even though it’s still preseason, the regular season kicks off shortly and the Isles need to find someone to kick up the offense. Because Evgeni cannot do it all himself.

Here’s the play of the night as Nabokov shows that at the age of 36 he still has the skills to compete. On this attack on the net Nabokov makes a great toe save.

Goon Matt Cooke Is Back With The Cheap Shots

Matt Cooke : Head Hunter and Dirty Player

September 26, 2011 – Dr. Rush

Watch your backs, kids. Matt Cooke is back in the wild and up to his usual cheap shots. And it’s only the second game of the preseason!

The Pittsburgh Penguins good made headlines last year for his cheap hits that earned him multiple suspensions. He was suspended two times last season by the league. The first was for a hit on Fedor Tytutin of the Columbus Blue Jackets, and then, only a month later, for an elbow on Ryan McDonagh.

So with the new season Cooke promised he has reformed and will play nice for the league. That promise lasted 2 games. So on Saturday Matt Cooke boards Jed Ortmeyer of the Minnesota Wild. It’s mild by Cooke terms but it will be interesting to see how his reputation earns him some possible discipline.

The Softer Side of Todd Bertuzzi

Todd Bertuzzi

September 26, 2011 – Dr. Deke

When Red Wings goon Todd Bertuzzi isn’t providing cheap shots or fighting, he’s actually able to score a goal or two. I wonder how long he’s been working on this beauty?

During a shootout in a preseason matchup against Chicago, Bertuzzi does a little razzle-dazzle with a sweet between-the-legs and back again shootout move.

Pens Sidney Crosby Participates in Scrimmage, Begins Comeback

September 25, 2011 – Dr. Rush

Injured Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby has been taking very important steps toward full recovery from concussions and is slowly making his way back to the NHL. Several thousand Pittsburgh Penguins season ticket holders watched Crosby taking part in a controlled scrimmage on Sunday.

It’s good to see #87 back on the ice again even if it’s just a no-contact workout. His steps toward recovery will take time but it’s just exciting to see him getting back out there on the skates.

There was no contact — Crosby still hasn’t been cleared for such work as he recovers from a concussion — in a session that focused mostly on set plays and faceoffs. He also participated in a shootout that ended the workout, snapping off a quick shot that was deflected high and wide by goaltender Scott Munroe.

“It was very controlled,” coach Dan Bylsma said of the scrimmage. “It wasn’t much of a display of skill, lines or matchups.”

But it was No. 87 on the ice, and that was good enough for the season ticket holder-only audience.

“It was a lot of teaching stuff,” Crosby said. “It was good to refresh all of that. It’s been a while since we went over that on the ice. I’m happy to be out there.”

Winnipeg Jets Impressive First Win

Winnipeg Jets

September 21, 2011 – Dr. Rush

It’s only preseason but it’s a great sight to see hockey back in Winnipeg. The Jets opened up for the first time in 15 years the NHL in the city that lost the original Jets to Phoenix. A wild, sold-out crowd helped show the team they loved hockey and cheered on the Jets to an impressive 6-1 on Tuesday night.

And when I say the crowd was wild I mean it. These guys and gals are really into the hockey now that it’s back and after checking out this video of the team’s first intro on the ice you have to wonder how they’ll act come playoff time.

With the soap opera of the move of the Thrashers to Winnipeg the team can now focus on hockey. And Dustin “Big Buff” Byfuglien’s court case. The star of the Jets is in a bit of trouble after being picked up for being drunk in a boat. Some serious chargers of drug use are out there but we’ll have to see how it all shakes out.

For now, Byfuglien and his teammates easily beat the Blue Jackets 6-1 as Byfuglien treated the Jets fans to their first fight in awhile.

Mike Modano Retires Via Facebook

Mike Modano

September 21, 2011 – Dr. Rush

There’s something romantic about one of the oldest NHL players in the league using the most modern method of technology to discuss his future plans.

Long time Star, and one time Detroit Red Wing center Mike Modano, one of the greatest U.S. born hockey stars ever in the NHL, announced on his Facebook page that he would retire after over two decades playing the game. Modano tops all U.S.-born NHL players in points (1,374), goals (561), playoff points (145) and all forwards in games played (1,499).

It’s sad to see him go but we all knew the time was getting near. Modano was let go from his longtime home with the Dallas Stars and fought off injuries to play a season in Detroit. The future of his career was in doubt and with the NHL preseason now started it was time to make a decision.

Via his Facebook page Modano announced his time is over with the game and it’s time to move on.

After a long summer of thinking about my future, I’ve come to the decision that it’s time to retire as a player from the NHL. There’s way too many people to thank here at this time and too much to say, so I have a press conference scheduled for early Friday afternoon. Check back Friday late afternoon for more. What a great ride it’s been!

There Is Something So Wrong About This

September 20, 2011 – Dr. Deke

Jaromir Jagr

I don’t know what’s more disturbing. The fact that NHL (returning) star Jaromir Jagr has a normal haircut or the fact he’s wearing a Flyers jersey. It just doesn’t compute in my head to see him in the right state, wrong city.

I know players change teams all the time these days but this one feels strange.

Finally. The Time Has Come

The NHL returns to Winnipeg tonight as the NHL Preseason kicks off the Jets return home against the Blue Jackets. It’s good to have you back in the league, Winnipeg.

Their regular season starts Oct. 9 at home against the Montreal Canadiens.
