I love feel good stories in sports, not just hockey. For my first instalment of Tommy’s TopTen Tuesday, I’ve decided to list the top ten players that if you drafted them in fantasy, have made you look like a hockey god among men. They players are only listed in order of current points, but keep in mind that all ten are superbly genius picks.
1. Dustin Penner (EDM, RW)
In just 32 games played Penner has 18 goals and 18 assists; significant because in 78 games last year he had 17 goals and 20 assists. For a guy that was constantly dogged for his pay cheque, he’s certainly earning his money this year, and the Oilers are winners of five straight on the road in which he’s totalled 3 goals and 3 assists.
2. Tomas Plekanec (MTL, C)
After a less than dazzling campaign, Pleksi has already amassed 34 points in his first 34 games; 28 of which were helpers. Not such a great pick if you play for goals, but this guy is putting up numbers like bingo night at the retirement home. He leads the Canadiens who signed a ton of high priced producers to do the job.
3. Wojtek Wolski (COL, LW)
Alongside the impressive start to the season for the Avs, Wolski is one of many young players (such as Paul Stastny) to provide the team with clutch goals on a regular basis. He already has 13 and 20 this year, and if he continues to play like he has, the Polish left winger can expect a lot of interest from rival GM in his contract year (2010/11)
4. Steven Stamkos (TB, C)
Although pointless in his last five, the Lighning sophomore has 17 goals and 13 helpers in 32 games this year. He’s living up to his expectations formed on draft day with a surprising increase in strength, with continually smooth hands. He leads the team in goals, and sits only second to Martin St. Louis in points (30 to St. Louis’ 33). A return to form may make the latest Lecavalier trade rumors to the Rangers and Kings a reality.
5. Rich Peverley (ATL, C)
The only player that I can actually say I picked this year in fantasy, Peverley was rewarded early in the season for his efforts with a new ctwo-year contract and a hefty raise from his miniscule six-figure contract. 30 points in 31 games makes this guy worth every cent of 2.6 million, and has complimented one of the game’s best goal scorers while adding to the success of an otherwise wheeling franchise.
6. Mike Fisher (OTT, C)
Despite only scoring 13 golas last year in Ottawa’s most pitiful season in recent memory, Fish already has 14 this year and has been Ottawa’s best all round player game in and game out amongst the likes of Kovalev, Spezza, and on most levels Alfie. His remarkable two way game has sparked “whispers” about a possible birth on Canada’s Olympic team, but someone should be screaming his name in Steve Yzerman’s ear. This guy is the real deal. And I don’t care who he’s dating, give the man some privacy.
7. James Neal (DAL, LW)
27 points in 28 games. 3 goals and 2 assists in his last five. Grab a dictionary and look up “consistency”. Second on the Stars in scoring tied with Loui Eriksson, who with Brendan Morrow make up a ménage of left wingers that any GM would be envious of. It’s also nice to see him become famous for something other than ending a player’s season….with a fight.
8. Matt Moulson (NYI, LW)
Sitting fifteenth in the league in goals, and already with 25 points, the Kings may be kicking themselves for letting this guy go. In the year of a Tavares, Moulson only trails the phenom by 2 points, both being assists. A very impressive first full season thus far for this kid. Take a good long look at him when making your next set of picks.
9. Bobby Ryan (ANA, RW)
Having a great year as was, Ryan has stepped it up in the absence of Teemu Selanne on the right side for a Ducks team that is far removed from their once unbeatable reputation. Although he was drafted second overall in 2005 many would say that he is simply livng up to expectations. But this guy is almost a lock for the American team in Feburary and could cause a lot of a headaches on an team that is already sure to be stacked with talent. Oh yeah, and he has 7 points in his last 5 games. Decent.
10. Brooks Laich (WAS, C)
Although you’d look like a homer picking any forward on the Caps, Laich is on pace to have a career season; and if you have him, you’d be quick to point out that the only Caps to have more points than him go by the names of Ovechkin, Semin, Backstrom and Green. You gotta feel good for this guy, and you gotta feel envy if someone else in your pool scooped him up. A minus 3 in his last two games is about all I can hold against the guy.
As always, thanks for reading my column, and I hope I’ve made you feel a little better about your knowledge of hockey, or a little bit more eager to posting on your trash talk board tomorrow. If you haven’t already.
Keep your heads up Hockey Fans.
December 14, 2009 – Tommy Miron
Power rankings. They mean little; just a chance for writers to give their two cents in a constantly fluctuating National Hockey League. At the end of the season, there is no award to the team that stayed the most number of weeks. There is no trophy for the largest volume of hate mail received, or the most humiliating assumption of roster rank. Nothing. Just a collection of meaningless articles floating around in cyberspace, growing larger each week like a snowball thrown from the peak of Everest. And with that, I present to you my first article as a certified hockey blogger: Miron’s Monday Power Rankings.
A weekly peek at the NHL from top to bottom.
NHL Power Rankings
1
Last Week: -
Los Angeles Kings
I would have never imagined myself typing what I just did. The Kings are the tops on my list. They’ve overtaken the Sharks as the best team in the West and have won four in a row. Anze Kopitar is already generating whispers in sentences containing the word “Hart”. If you’re going to watch a hockey game tonight catch these guys against the Canucks. Should be outstanding.
2
Last Week: -
New Jersey Devils
The Silver Medal this week goes to the Devils for a variety of reasons. Eight wins in their last ten, possibly the best road team I’ve ever seen, and record after record continuing to roll in for Martin Brodeur. I called for the Devils to win their division this year, but if they keep up this play they good be looking toward much bigger, shinier prizes.
3
Last Week: -
San Jose Sharks
This will be the only time you will ever see me place a team that’s winless in five in the top three on Monday. Mark my words. However, the Sharks are simply amazing to watch this year. However, their powerplay has been faultering, and questions about Joe Thornton tends to be like origami: folds under pressure. With only one game this week against the Ducks, the Sharks will most likely stay in my good graces.
4
Last Week: -
Chicago Blackhawks
It’s frightening to look at the young talent on the Hawks, and when Marian Hossa gets his stroke back, this team may be the best of the league’s second half. Any fears that Chicago fans had when Huet went down have been erased by the single goal allowance over three games by backup tender Antii Niemi. Which only leaves me with one question about the Blackhawks: who is Antii Niemi and how can my team get him??
5
Last Week: -
Pittsburgh Penguins
Not an exceptional week for the Pens, especially with a loss to the Canes, but they are looking like the champs again. They seem to be scoring at will again and are boasting a 8-2-1 record in the last eleven. I still think these guys have a great chance to repeat, but it will be a much different final this year.
6
Last Week: -
Buffalo Sabres
Lindy Ruff is the longest serving NHL coach and for good reason. The American should be very excited about Ryan Miller wearing the red white and blue in Vancouver, as he’s continually stopped thirty plus shots (in seven of their last ten to be exact). Let the Vezina speculation begin…..
7
Last Week: -
Calgary Flames
Another team that I don’t see staying this low on the rankings, my pick for the Western Conference Champs last year (ouch) dropped a crucial game to the Avs on Sunday and lost the division lead. They’ve also dropped four of six and have only scored once on their last twenty-four playoff chances. They could really use Cammalleri right about now.
8
Last Week: -
Washington Capitals
The Caps look horrid against a much inferior Leafs team on Saturday, being completely outplayed and leaving few questions about the ineptness of their secondary goaltending. Getting shut out by a very worthy Ryan Miller is excusable, but a near loss to Carolina has me putting these guys at eighth; probably the lowest I’ll have them as long as they have Number eight on the roster sheet.
9
Last Week: -
Colorado Avalanche
A lot of you might disagree with this pick but the Avs are playing damn good hockey when everyone who knows anything about hockey expected the opposite. They lead the Northwest after Sunday’s defeat of the Flames, and perhaps even more impressive was their 43 shots allowed in 2 games. Yes, that’s the best a team has done this year. Winners in four of five, these guys are the real deal.
10
Last Week: -
Phoenix Coyotes
The Coyotes continue to be the feel good story of the year. Going 6-0-1 in their last seven and only scoring more than 3 goals once in any of those games can only mean one thing; solid defence and rock-solid goaltending from Ilya Bryzgalov. This guy is a legitimate Vezina trophy contender this year, or whatever they decide to rename the trophy (which I will rant about in the near future). The only team to do this good after Gretzky left were the 1989-90 Oilers.
11
Last Week: -
Vancouver Canucks
They lost to Nashville, and they beat the Thrashers and Wild this week. Not enough to coax me that they belong in the top ten this week, but the play of the Sedins has been spectacular. Vancouver is one of those teams that you know will make the playoffs, but will give you headaches in your playoff pool…..cause you just never know. Either way, the second best goaltender in the league will always give you a chance to win. Look for the nucks to have a tough time against the Kings tonight; my pick for game of the night.
12
Last Week: -
Boston Bruins
Maybe a little low for this potential powerhouse, but It’s hard to look at these guys in the same light with the shadow of last season lingering over them. Tim Thomas is finally living down to my expectations, and Tuukka Rask is turning out to be the second best gift the Leafs gave the Bs in the last year. Marc Savard continues to be the most underestimated player in the league, racking up nine goals in his last eleven, in which Boston has been 8-1-2. Coincidence? Hardly.
13
Last Week: -
Nashville Predators
I told a co-worker today to pick the Blue Jackets tonight over the Preds, and now I feel like I’ll owe him a free lunch this week. Nashville has seven more wins then losses, and Martin Erat seems to have finally found his scoring touch after only ten years as an NHL player. But seriously, the Predators are solidified in the Western playoff picture, and I don’t expect them to be moved from that position anytime soon.
14
Last Week: -
Detroit Red Wings
There’s been no team in the league that has had to put up with more injury woes than the Wings (Dan Cleary the latest to go down), but they manage to squeeze out points. They’re 3-1-1 in their last five. Although they’re nowhere near the form that they are in the postseason, this team when full and playing under Professor Babcock will always be legitimate contenders come the spring.
15
Last Week: -
Dallas Stars
Another team that has relied heavily on extra time for points, the Stars are here largely in part because of their 14-8-10 record. With no key injuries at the moment, Dallas have no excuses but to remain at the midway spot for the week. Games against Carolina and Atlanta should give them a few wins, and they have more than a good chance against the Wings on Saturday.
16
Last Week: -
Edmonton Oilers
The hottest team in the league right now (winners of their last five on the road) can attribute that success to heroics such as their four third period goals against the Blues on Friday. Not to mention they did so without the services of their starting goalie. Pat Quinn never gives his team a night off, and Edmonton has the wheels to live up to those expectations. Dustin Penner continues to silence his critics.
17
Last Week:-
Atlanta Thrashers
This team is dropping like a stone. Clinging to the last playoff spot in the East, the Thrashers seem to be playing themselves out of the spot with lacklustre performances from against teams they should be beating. Also, Maxim Afhineghenov continues to be, in my opinion, the most boneheaded signing of the year. One assist and a minus nine in his last six games. This guy’s headed to the K.
18
Last Week:-
Ottawa Senators
Despite a brutal road trip this week, the Sens found a way to win back at home. In a very competitive Northeast, games against Toronto and Buffalo this week could prove costly if they don’t play their surpsingly efficient style. A three goal night from Alex Kovalev was promising, but increased production from Jason Spezza and continual steady goaltending from the reliable Brian Elliot are vital this week if the Senators wish to keep pace.
19
Last Week:-
St. Louis Blues
Their defence has been terrible, but accredit a lot of that to the absence of Eric Brewer. It was a bad week for the Blues, but steady production from their offence will most likely see these guys sitting above .500 for a while, and surely climbing out of the basement of the Central.
20
Last Week: -
Anaheim Ducks
The ducks are playing better hockey this month and have been consistent in getting points when they count. The injury to Temu Selanne hasn’t hurt them nearly as bad as once thought, with role players such as rookie Dan Sexton filling the net. Factor in Scott Niedermyer and a firce goaltending tandem and the Ducks can start thinking about not giving away free tickets. Dates with the Canucks, Sharks and Coyotes give them the chance to show us if they’re for real this week.
21
Last Week:-
Montreal Canadiens
Above I mentioned the play of Marc Andre Fleury and how it could earn him an Olympic roster spot, but don’t count out Carey Price. Without his work between the pipes as of late the “team of the century” avoided a few drubbings and escaped with a win on more than one occasion. A loss to Atlanta hurt them in the rankings, but their top-ten PK unit has left a division title well within reach.
22
Last Week: -
Minnesota Wild
The Wild are 7-2-0 in their last nine, picking up convincing wins against Calgary and Colorado in that stretch. A zero percent powerplay and heavy reliance on overtime and the shootout is the only thing keeping the wild out of the top twenty. Todd Richards is proving once again that a limited NHL resume means nothing in today’s coaching game; even though his one year of experience was with the Sharks.
23
Last Week: -
Toronto Maple Leafs
The Leafs looked great on Saturday against the Caps, but a lot of that could have been to Washington’s lack of secondary goaltending. I know the members of Leafs nation won’t be happy with this placement, but really they could be lower considering they’re still the second worst team in the league. A win against Ottawa Monday could really help these guys positionally in their division, and could provide further motivation for their sudden upswing.
24
Last Week: -
New York Rangers
A lot of people will probably be fuming at me for putting six teams below the Blueshirts, but there is a lot of bad hockey teams right now that enable a team that’s one game below .500 the 24th spot. Pavol Demitra’s been great this year, but lack of secondary scoring and overspending on defence are the usual suspects. However, games against the Thrashers, Flyers and two against the Islanders doesn’t have me condemning these guys out of the top twenty next week.
25
Last Week: -
Tampa Bay Lightning
Losers of eight of nine, there is absolutely no excuse for the lack of offence being demonstrated by the Bolts. Having their offence centering around a sophomore in Steven Stamkos, and Ryan Malone, one would have to wonder if this could be the year Vinny Lecavalier finds himself a new sweater. Perhaps the Rouge, Blanc et Bleu?
26
Last Week:-
New York Islanders
Although surpassing expectations by leaps and bounds this year, the Isles have won just four of their last eleven and are giving up a ton of goals. It’s also important to point out that although the win at home against Boston was huge on Saturday, it took overtime; and they allowed Philly to light the lamp six times on Tuesday.
27
Last Week: -
Columbus Blue Jackets
Only one win in five games this month and who’s to blame? Ken Hitchcock? Rick Nash? What about Steve Mason? The Calder winner who’s supposed to be Canada’s wildcard goalie plays for the team with the 28th most goals scored on them. Stevie Y take note: Fleury is your third man.
28
Last Week:-
Philadelphia Flyers
The best team in the bottom five on paper, the Flyers have one just two games in their last twelve. Mix that with adjusting to a new coaching style, admissions of lacklustre play from their stars and an abdominal tear to Ray Emery, these beasts of the east as they were known at the start of the season have some serious work to do in order to show glimpses of becoming a contender again. However, I have a tough time counting a team out as long as that Pronger guy we see every June is still on the blueline.
29
Last Week:-
Florida Panthers
The Atlanta Thrashers were recently named the worst team of the decade by Sports Illustrated, but the Panthers aren’t far behind in my books. Not since rats rained down from the bleachers has this team produced anything of significance on the Ice. Their captain is Bryan McCabe. Byan McCabe. The Leafs didn’t even want the guy. Mixed with the constant underacheivements of Horton and Weiss, the only thing keeping this team out of last was a win at New Jersey this week.
30
Last Week:-
Carolina Hurricanes
In a way it pains me to put these guys as my initial basement dwellers. Injuries to key players have been their cancer all year, with Joe Corvo being their latest casualty to go down with a freakish laceration to his Achilles. Granted they had a tough week playing the Penguins, Devils and Capitals, but missed a chance to pick up a W in Ottawa on Saturday. Better luck next week boys.
September 17, 2009 – Larry Gasik
Things are finally going right in Boston. With current Vezina Trophy Winner Tim Thomas, and Norris Trophy winner Zdeno Chara, I’m picking Boston to take home the Stanley Cup in 2010. They also have the 2009 Jack Adams winner in Claude Julien who was given a three year extension this off season. It appears that they’re going to lose Phil Kessel lead their team in goal scoring, but I expect him to be traded before he signs an offer sheet.
I truly am starting to believe that Savard can make anyone score, which is why the potential loss of Kessel doesn’t concern me. With little cap space left ($1.8 million according to NhlNumers.com), I also don’t expect them to make many additions. What I would like to see though is the addition of a stay at home defensemen for them.
September 16, 2009 – Jeff Gesner
Jeff Gesner is the owner/operator of a small sports apparel/memorabilia business
called “The Stadium”. He spent some time in the scriptwriting business for film. The transition has been satisfying for Jeff being a sports fanatic.
Obviously picking Detroit, San Jose or Pittsburgh are sensible choices for the 2010 Stanley Cup Winner, but there is another team that I feel has improved this off-season and will make a push for the Stanley Cup. That team is the Philadelphia Flyers.
The Flyers have improved an already solid roster, they acquired goaltender Ray Emery this summer, and as well they added all-star defenseman Chris Pronger. Emery’s off ice problems haven’t been kept confidential, we all know about his road rage issues and the party scene he enjoyed while being in Ottawa, but he did go to the Stanley Cup finals in the 2006-07 season, so unlike Biron and Niittymaki, he has some experience. I think Philadelphia will be a good fit for Ray as long as he is willing to stay away from the problems that eventually ended his career in Ottawa.
Chris Pronger doesn’t need to be hyped-up, he’s been a top blue liner in the NHL for over a decade, Pronger has a Norris Trophy, Hart Trophy, and a Stanley Cup on his resume, along with being a five time all-star. Pronger is going to be the key to Philadelphia’s success this year.
Returning to the Flyers roster is Simon Gagne, Jeff Carter, and team captain Mike Richards. I feel both Carter and Richards will be top 10 in scoring amongst the NHL this upcoming season, I’m also watching for Danny Briere to have a comeback year. Scott Hartnell put up career high 30 goals last season, and sophomore sensation Claude Giroux will add a scoring presence as well.
Philadelphia possesses youth, experience, scoring punch, and of course that Flyer toughness. If players such as Briere and Gagne can stay healthy, they have a legit shot at winning the cup in 2010.
September 13, 2009 – Adam Steevens
Adam Steevens is a student, author and blogger who has semi-coherent thoughts about the NHL
I admit, this is a dark-horse pick, (In vegas, Vancouver is sitting at 18/1 odds) but the Canucks have the balanced formula it takes to bring the Cup back to Canada for the first time since 1993. You can’t ignore Roberto Luongo; he is arguably one of the best netminders in the league, and championships are often won or lost on goaltending alone. Luongo kept a stellar .920 save percentage over 54 games, and stayed consistent throughout the playoffs last year (.914 over 10 games). Not only is Roberto hungry to win a cup for Vancouver, but he’s competing for starting job for Team Canada in the Olympics; expect him to have an outstanding year.
The Canucks have a top-six that can compete in the stacked Western Conference, (D. Sedin, H. Sedin, Wellwood, Demitra, Kesler, Burrows, Johnson) and expect a breakout year from youngster Alexandre Burrows; he netted 51 points in his third year in the NHL last season, and proved he can score clutch goals when he knocked St.Louis out of the first round with an overtime, series-ending goal.
The Vancouver blueline looks like one of the best in the Western Conference (Ehrhoff, Edler, Schneider, Bieksa, Lukowich, Salo), and with the recent acquisition of Ehrhoff and Schneider, they continued to build up depth on defense. Couple this strong defense with the world-class goaltending in Roberto Luongo, and it’s clear that the Vancouver Canucks are a serious contender for the 2010 Stanley cup.
August 24, 2009 – Jeff Gesner
I had considered doing a Top 10 list of the greatest to ever play the game of hockey, but after viewing literally hundreds of these lists over the years, I decided to stir things up and try something a little more unique. I will present one of “Hockey’s Greatest Teams” each week over a ten week period. I’ll discuss why I think they are deserving of being ranked a top 10 team and what they accomplished as a team. Enjoy.
1996 Team USA
The United States isn’t recognized for having a potent hockey program, but at the 1996 World Cup without warning they shocked Team Canada by posting a 5-2 win achieving their first bona fide international hockey victory. Tony Amonte will forever be remembered for scoring the go-ahead goal beating Curtis Joseph.
“When we play against Canada, will we honestly believe in ourselves as a unit that can win, that we belong there? That’s the hurdle we have to jump if we’re going to win, and that’s what this training camp will be all about.” – Mike Richter
I think this win over Canada was the beginning of a new era for American hockey, the veteran hockey players for USA finally believed winning was possible. Never before was Team USA able to compete with the Canadian powerhouse, but having players such as Mike Modano, Pat LaFontaine, Chris Chelios, and a world class goalie in Mike Richter allowed them to not only compete, but eventually win the title over Canada.
Roster: Tony Amonte, Keith Tkachuk, Scott Young, Brian Rolston, Shawn McEachern, Mike Modano, Joel Otto, Bill Guerin, Shawn Chambers, Adam Deadmarsh, Steve Konawalchuk, Phil Housley, Bryan Smolinski, Doug Weight, Gary Suter, Mathieu Schneider, Chris Chelios, Derian Hatcher, Kevin Hatcher, Pat LaFontaine, John LeClair, Brett Hull, Brian Leetch (captain), Guy Hebert, Mike Richter, Ron Wilson (coach).
